After rescuing a jet pilot as Thor, Don Blake tries to propose marriage to Jane but decides to ask permission of Odin first. Jane, knowing Don's feelings and frustrated at his hesitancy, takes a nursing position with Dr. Andrews. Odin tells Thor that marriage to a mortal is impossible. Meanwhile, New York panics at the approach of the Lava Man, who Loki brought to the surface from Subterranea through a volcano. The Lava Man decides humans are too weak to keep the surface world to themselves. When the National Guard fails to stop him, the city is evacuated. After a protracted battle, Thor defeats Molto by trapping him in a Mjolnir-created whirlwind and dropping him back into a volcano that he then seals up. Back at his office, Don finds Jane leaving with Dr. Andrews, who took care of her during the evacuation while Don was nowhere to be found. Don wonders if Thor is destined to live out his days alone.
